Product Development Training (PDT) for Business Member organizations (BMOs) in Kakuma.


Project Description

The PDT for BMOs project in Kalobeyei, Kakuma was commissioned by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), in line with its mandate to offer humanitarian assistance to refugees and displacement-affected communities in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps, Nairobi and Mombasa. This is by implementing protection and livelihood activities that increase self-reliance and expand opportunities for a dignified life among the displaced community. To that end, DRC works to promote self-reliance through improving economic capacities in businesses and trade.
The training, therefore, aimed to foster development of competitive commercial crafts by equipping BMOs in Kakuma, Kalobeyei Settlement and the Kalobeyei location, to improve their product offerings and competitiveness. The project assisted producers to improve the designs and quality of their products in order to meet current market preferences, resulting in increased business for the groups.
Our role was to generate market intelligence, underpinning potential markets, establish market opportunities and competitors’ actions; Develop a plan for a product development intervention; Develop a curriculum to inform product development training and to deliver product development training. In addition to undertaking practical product realization, participants learnt how to costing & price their products; Conduct product promotion and how to augment product value through branding and packaging.
