Building competitiveness through quality: QMS coaching at Promise Leather Works Ltd
Within German Development Cooperation, the East African Community (EAC) and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB – German Metrology Institute) are implementing the project “Strengthening the Regional Quality Infrastructure for Selected Sectors in the EAC.” The programme is improving regional quality infrastructure in line with the needs of the leather sector, equipping SMEs with the tools to achieve compliance, traceability, operational controls, and readiness for QMS certification.
As part of this initiative, a select cohort of role model SMEs across the region are receiving on-site coaching visits by PTB expert Beatrice Mwasi, who is supported by the Centre for Business Innovation & Training (CBiT). Promise Leather Works Ltd., recognised for its quality products, was among the enterprises chosen for this tailored engagement. The coaching provides structured and practical roadmaps to close process gaps and strengthen internal systems, positioning these businesses to scale sustainably and competitively.
Why QMS Matters for Leather Businesses
In today’s competitive markets, quality is not just a compliance requirement, it is the foundation of trust, sustainability, and growth. A well-implemented Quality Management System (QMS) goes beyond paperwork; it equips enterprises with the discipline and tools to consistently deliver value, reduce risks, and respond to dynamic market demands.
Many enterprises in the leather sector face challenges such as inconsistent processes, lack of documentation, or limited awareness of local, regional and international standards. By addressing these gaps through structured QMS adoption, businesses can:
- Improve efficiency and reduce waste: Streamlined processes save costs and optimize resource use.
- Build credibility and trust: ISO-aligned practices strengthen relationships with buyers, regulators, and partners.
- Enhance compliance with market requirements: Ensuring licenses, permits, and standards are systematically addressed.
- Manage risks proactively: Identifying and mitigating potential disruptions for greater operational resilience.
- Position for sustainable growth: Embedding continuous improvement, environmental responsibility, and social accountability.
- Unlock regional and global markets: Demonstrating readiness for high-value opportunities under AfCFTA and beyond.
In this way, QMS becomes more than a management tool, it is a strategic pathway for Africa’s leather SMEs to move from survival mode to sustainable competitiveness.
Coaching at Promise Leather Works Ltd.
The on-site coaching at Promise Leather Works went beyond generic advice. Over two visits, it provided a step-by-step, hands-on journey that combined diagnostics, compliance checks, and system strengthening.
During the first visit, the focus was on laying the foundations. The team worked through a self-assessment and gap analysis, reviewed operating licenses and legal compliance, and introduced practical tools such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and traceability systems. Environmental and occupational health dimensions were also addressed, covering areas like waste and effluent treatment, workplace safety (ISO 45001), and social responsibility. The visit closed with a clear action plan that mapped “what–who–when,” giving the enterprise a practical roadmap for change.
The second visit built on this groundwork, moving from diagnosis to consolidation. Promise Leather Works presented its corrective actions and evidence of progress, followed by on-site walkthroughs to validate improvements in documentation, safety, and traceability. Coaching clinics tackled lagging areas such as internal audits, feedback systems, and compliance. Good practices were documented for sector-wide sharing, while management was engaged in a forward-looking dialogue to ensure leadership commitment, sustainability, and accountability. The sessions concluded with a refined action plan, updated timelines, and monitoring indicators for the next phase.
Through this structured process, Promise Leather Works is embedding quality management practices that foster sustainability, competitiveness, and long-term resilience, further strengthening its position as a role model SME in the regional leather value chain.
Part of a Regional Programme
The coaching at Promise Leather Works represents one step in a wider effort running from July to October 2025. During this period, selected SMEs across the region will undergo on-site visits, with lessons and case studies from these engagements shared in two regional virtual workshops. These sessions are designed to transfer knowledge, provide practical templates, and equip EAC leather enterprises with actionable next steps towards QMS readiness.
Through Spotlighting role model SMEs like Promise Leather Works, PTB and the EAC Secretariat demonstrate the tangible benefits of structured QMS adoption, encouraging wider uptake across the sector.
This engagement reflects our shared mission to see Africa’s enterprises thrive in structured, sustainable, and globally competitive ways. At CBiT, we believe that quality management is not a one-time event but a continuous journey of improvement, one that builds stronger businesses and stronger value chains.
Looking Ahead
The QMS coaching at Promise Leather Works Ltd. is a practical example of how targeted support can transform enterprise operations. These role model SMEs will not only strengthen their own competitiveness but also generate case studies to be shared in upcoming regional virtual workshops, ensuring that lessons learnt are transferred to other enterprises across the EAC leather sector.
As more SMEs adopt structured QMS practices, the sector will benefit from:
- Enhanced compliance and readiness: smoother operations, better licensing, and access to high-value markets.
- Operational efficiency and competitiveness: reduced inefficiencies, stronger traceability systems, and improved productivity.
- Sustainability and credibility: integration of environmental and social responsibility policies that reinforce market trust.
- Regional trade opportunities: alignment with EAC, AfCFTA and international standards, unlocking new business prospects beyond borders
.Promise Leather Works stands as an example of this transformation journey, demonstrating how QMS adoption can ripple outward to build a more resilient and competitive African leather sector.
